Feb 2012 NAAMSA Figures

The figures released by the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (NAAMSA) indicate small increases for new car and commercial vehicle sales for the month of Feb, when comparing them to the same period last year.

A total of 52, 356 vehicles were sold in February 2012, an increase of 6.4% on 49,197 units sold in February 2011.  To break that figure down further – 40,761 units represented dealer sales, 7.6% represented sales to the vehicle rental Industry, 5.8 % sales to Government and 4.4% to Industry corporate fleet sales.

Exports of South African produced motor vehicles during February, 2012 at 22,630 vehicles had registered a decline of 2,525 units compared to the 25,155 vehicles during February last year.  These export figures are expected to start increasing again from April and the general outlook for 2012 in terms of total industry sales remains one of modest growth.  Factors that would continue to lend support to the domestic market included the ongoing improvement in the financial position of consumers, relatively low interest rates, continuing improvement in vehicle affordability in real terms, the highly competitive trading environment and new model introductions.

Here are some interesting findings from the February 2012 NAAMSA New Vehicle Sales Report:

• Toyota took top spot with 9,807 sales (and exporting almost the same amount).  The Hilus taking the most sales at 3,384 units.
• VW was a close second with 9,002 sales – the bulk of that from the Vivo range (2,651).
• Other big sellers were the Nissan NP200 with 1,450 units finding new homes.  1,029 Isuzu KB’s were sold and Ford moved 1,042 Figo’s.
